2014 07 15 PVC Tillandsia Stand by Mr. Wanter Tokushige

At AOC show, some vendors were selling Tillandsia and our Country Store had donated succulents.  As it may be a good idea to combine these very different types of plants with orchid growing, we visited Cactus and Succulents Society of Hawaii's July meeting.  Cactus & Succulents can take much more light than orchids, so why not use them to shade orchid growing area?

The presentation by Mr. Walter Tokushige was about how to make a simple PVC Tillandsia Stand (for non-carpenters).  Courtesy and approval by Walter, attached is his hand out instructions.  Thank you Walter, for sharing your invention!  (He also mentioned jokingly that he'd build one for $30 if anybody is interested but not want to build yourself.)
The meeting was nice, crowded (good attendance), and relaxed.  We were greeted by the president, Nathan, who praised (?) us for the hard to achieve task of killing a few tillandsia in the past.  They had plant sale by club members at 7:00 p.m., and I scored a few good looking tillandsia.  Nathan also gave us this very interesting plant as a challenge.  It look like .... uunnnmm.... a green coral reef with hair!?  Let's hope they'll survive this time...

Hawaii State Farm Fair at Kualoa Ranch - this weekend! - July 12 & 13, 2014

Heard that they have plant sales, too... try to get there early, though. The traffic to get there on Kam Hwy was really bad in the afternoon a couple of years ago, especially from Waimanalo side.

2014 07 09 Wild Orchid in Tokyo

Found this orchid flowering in a nature reserve park in suburb of Tokyo.  The leaves caught my eye, then the flower.  Dainty, but dignified and beautiful.

Also found was "Murasakishikibu (Lady Murasaki)".  This one is not orchid family, and not murasaki (purple) in color during spring, but it turns beautiful purple color in fall.

2014 06 17 Earl's Experiment - Huge Aloe

Not as big as the stinky plant at Foster Botanical Garden, but here's some pictures of a huge aloe plant.  My friend Earl has been experimenting to see how big an aloe plant can grow.  So he kept breaking off the keikis and letting the mother plant itself to grow.  At the beginning, this aloe was just a regular size plant.  I can't remember how long it took but now it's pretty big with tall flower shoots, as you can see it as compared to the door on the background.  The leaves at the thickest is like a foot wide.

2014 06 09 Succulent Lady - an article on Honolulu Star Advertiser

This lady - Peria - belongs to Kunia, Ewa, & Windward Orchid Society, as well as Cactus & Succulent Society and Bonsai Society.  Wow!

2014 06 15 Taking a break from Orchids...

Being around orchid community for some years, one of the very interesting thing I found is that many orchidists actually have pretty diverse interests in other things.  Some are into bowling, others are into Koi and gold fish.  Great artists and musicians.  I see many lady orchidists are wonderful cooks & bakers.
Here, I picked up some non-orchid plants, pulled out old chairs from garage, and made a little succulents garden in the front yard.  Also, the tillandsias that I was afraid to put in the sun, finally debuted in full sun.
And then, of course we go back to orchids.....

Field goal!
